GLOBAL CAMPAIGN TO DEFEND QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION

TEACHER TRADE UNIONS UNITE IN GLOBAL CAMPAIGN TO DEFEND QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION

The NASUWT has joined education trade unions from around the world in a major Global Year of Action to defend the worldwide risk to quality public education provision.

The NASUWT has been at the forefront of developing the ‘Unite for Quality Education: Better Education for a Better World’ campaign, which is co-ordinated by Education International (EI), a federation of education trade unions which represents more than 30 million teachers worldwide. The campaign was launched on the eve of World Teachers’ Day (5 October) at a high-profile event in Paris, where the NASUWT was represented.

The campaign is aimed at creating awareness among governments, intergovernmental agencies and society that quality public education provision for all is one of the fundamental pillars of a just and equitable society. A number of activities will take place in countries around the world during the year of action.

The campaign echoes many of the concerns about the threat to the teaching profession that the NASUWT has been raising through its ongoing campaign of industrial action, and which is encapsulated in its recent ground-breaking Maintaining World Class Schools report.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“Public education and the teaching profession are under attack around the world, including, shamefully, in the UK.

“We have issued a challenge to government administrations across the UK through our Maintaining World Class Schools report to commit to the future of public education and to the right of every child and young person to quality education.

“We have found a real energy amongst teachers around the world to join forces and use our collective energy to stand up for quality education as a human right and public good. The NASUWT will be actively involved in this important campaign.”
