Commenting on the speech by Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt to the North of England Education Conference, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:

“Tristram Hunt is right to focus on the importance of the teaching workforce and the support needed to provide high-quality education for children and young people.

“Teachers are being starved of access to CPD.

“Teachers have a commitment to continuing professional development, but they do not have a contractual entitlement to receive it.

“Investing more in teachers is the best way to secure high standards for all children and young people.”
