TALIS SURVEY SHOULD SERVE AS A WAKE-UP CALL TO THE COALITION SAYS NASUWT

Responding to the latest Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) results, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“This should act as a wake-up call for Secretary of State as it demonstrates the detrimental impact of his reforms upon teachers and ultimately on children and young people.

“The Survey confirms the findings of the NASUWT’s own extensive research.

“Teachers are working much longer hours, and are spending much of their working time on pointless bureaucracy and administration.

“Teachers should be free to concentrate on teaching children, not standing at photocopiers and filling in unnecessary forms.

“The Survey’s findings that teachers feel they are far less valued in society, confirms what NASUWT members have been saying and is illustrated by the fact that record numbers of teachers have seriously considered leaving the profession in the last twelve months.

“Is it any wonder they feel this way when on an almost daily basis they have their professionalism denigrated by politicians and their supporters?

“This Survey clearly recognises the need to respect and value teachers and teaching. It’s about time politicians took note
