MAINTAINING WORLD CLASS SCHOOLS

MAINTAINING WORLD CLASS SCHOOLS

The NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, today won the support of TUC Congress in Liverpool for its campaign to reclaim the promise of our public education service, with its entitlements for all children and young people, and to maintain our world class schools.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“It is a myth that our public education system is failing.

“It is a world class system, but this will not be maintained unless the Government takes action to end poverty and disadvantage, invest more, not less, and deliver national entitlements for all children and young people.”

Geoff Branner, President of the NASUWT, speaking on the motion, said:

“Britain has a world class education system.

“But this is being jeopardised by attacks on the pay of the school workforce, replacing qualified teachers with unqualified staff to reduce the pay bill with the sole purpose of allowing predatory private companies to profit from our children’s education.

“World class schools are maintained by our values of social justice, equality and solidarity. They are an entitlement for all our children.”
