NASUWT: North Yorkshire Federation
The Largest Teachers’ Union in North Yorkshire

Chris Head, North Yorkshire Federation Secretary for NASUWT, reports on the Salford Strike;

20 October 2014

Members of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, will hold the first of five days of strike action starting 21 October at Swinton High School in Salford.

The action has been called as a result of the employer’s unacceptable working practices.

“The strike action is completely avoidable.

“The NASUWT has made every effort to secure an agreed way forward through negotiation, but serious concerns about bureaucratic and workload intensive policies, which are diverting teachers from focusing on the needs of their students and which are undermining their professionalism, remain.

“Our members are all dedicated and committed members of staff, but they have been left with no choice but to make this strong protest.

“All that is needed to avoid this strike action is a commitment by the employer to genuine negotiation with the NASUWT and to address the concerns of teachers.

“We stand ready to avert the strike action.”

Karen Hopwood, NASUWT National Executive Member for Greater Manchester, said:

“Teachers have no wish to disrupt pupils’ education but have been left with no choice.

“As professionals they are entitled to have their concerns listened to seriously and addressed.

“That is all it will take to avoid this action.”
