NASUWT WELCOMES ACADEMY RECOGNITION THAT TEACHERS DESERVE MORE THAN THE GOVERNMENT’S 1% PAY CAP
Commenting on the news that the Astrea academy chain is to give all teachers a 2% pay award for 2017/18, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union, said:
“The NASUWT welcomes the recognition by the Astrea Multi Academy Trust that teachers deserve more than the Government’s 1% pay cap after years and years of real terms cuts to the value of teachers’ pay, a point strongly made by the NASUWT in the pay claim we submitted to the Trust.
“At a time of a worsening teacher recruitment and retention crisis, all employers must recgonise the need to prioritise spending on teachers’ pay in order to recruit and retain a motivated teaching workforce.
“Investing in teachers is investing in high quality education for all children and young people.
“The NASUWT will continue to submit its pay claims to employers which defend vigorously the entitlements of teachers on pay and press for them to reject the Government’s unfair and unjust public sector pay cap which is continuing to fuel the teacher supply crisis.”
